About Townsville PCYC
Townsville PCYC was established in 1969 and services the community of the Townsville and Thuringowa area. The branch is situated in the centre of the twin cities and provides approximately 32 sporting and recreational activities.
The centre has just recently undertaken a $4.5 million dollar redevelopment, through the support of the Queensland Government and Townsville City Council, creating a ‘family centre of excellence in fitness and health'. The redevelopment includes a community gym, new activity space, conference facilities, and childcare centre.
Outside School Hours Care delivers and picks up students from school as far as Ryan Catholic College, Wulguru State School, and Marian Catholic School.
The Conference facility includes the ‘Barbara Bricker Room', which can cater for small, medium, and large functions. Catering is also available through the branch.
Activities on offer include ‘Babies and Parents Exercise', ‘Gym-Kids', five different martial arts, boxing, playgroup, ‘Old Time Dance', tai chi, ‘Futzal', trampoline and many more.
The branch currently has around 70,000 attendances per year with a membership base of 1200, although this is expected to grow in 2009 due to the redevelopment.
We are actively involved in numerous community partnerships including federal, state and local government.
The branch is perfectly situated in the Aitkenvale Parklands, at the end of Wellington Street, Aitkenvale, in the centre of the twin cities. It is surrounded by trees and open parklands and neighbouring the Townsville Bridge Club and West Townsville Kindy.
The branch was officially named the ‘Dennis McMinn Centre' in 2005, in honour of a life-member and past chairperson. Dennis had been involved with the club since it started, as a volunteer, activity coach, committee member and chairperson. His service to the branch will never be forgotten and his presence felt forever.
