Activ8 Advice: Setting future goals

Firstly, congratulations! You have made it to the final stage of the 8 week challenge!

Now you may be asking, where do I go from here? Let’s knuckle down and ensure you can make 8 weeks become 12 weeks, 6 months, one year and beyond. Don’t stop now. Do not waste 8 weeks’ worth of hard work. By following some simple steps, you can set yourself up for ongoing success in your fitness endeavours.

Start small

What goal could you set for the next 4 weeks to get you to the 12-week mark? What goals could you set yourself to bring yourself to the 6-month mark? Think lifestyle such as kicking the ball with the kids on the weekend or climbing a mountain with friends. Think work life such as preparing your food for the day to avoid eating out or giving in to staff room delights. Think exercise regime such as, setting times and days on when and what you are going to train.

Make it visual

Have a diary, write the goals out:

Lifestyle: Kick the balls with the kids Saturday
Work: Precook all your lunches for the week, on Sunday
Training: Book into Monday 5pm, Wednesday 6am, Saturday 6am Group Classes

This way, you can see your week ahead, you know what is coming and no goal can be missed.

Be honest with yourself

Did you have a session booked in today and you didn’t go? Did you give in to temptations at work? Acknowledge these mishaps and move on! It won’t be the last time this happens but beating yourself up or giving in by completely blowing out the day or week, won’t get you anywhere, physically and mentally!

Form a support system

Get your work colleagues into a fitness challenge between you all. Get your household into regular active movement. Do you all like surfing, swimming, push bike riding? Do something you all enjoy, this way it won’t always seem like exercise.

Setting goals for your future doesn’t have to be hard. They don’t have to be massive like running a marathon. Keeping active, eating a balanced diet and enjoying all aspects, sets you up for a happy and healthy fitness adventure.
