Activ8 Advice: What Foods are Sources of Dietary Iron?

As iron is essential for life, and is incredibly important for producing energy, optimal immune function and storing oxygen in our muscles.

Below are some recommended foods with high sources of iron:
• Red meat, pork, chicken and liver
• Oysters and mussels
• Eggs
• Dark green vegetables eg. spinach, rocket, silver beet, kale, broccoli, bok-choy
• Nuts and seeds
• Prune juice and molasses
• Tofu, chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans
• Dried apricots
• Quinoa
• Tahini

Please note that animal sources of iron are better absorbed by the body. If you are eating a non-animal source of iron, it is advisable to eat it with a food containing Vitamin C to help its absorption such as a squeeze of lemon juice on veggies or have with a piece of fruit.
