Congratulations to our Indigenous Programs team, who hosted another successful Bunburra event. Now in its fourth year, our annual showcase Indigenous beach football tournament was held on Saturday, 18 August at Surfers Paradise Beach. It brought over 160 players from 10 Indigenous communities together, and attracted thousands of spectators throughout the day.
Bunburra is a fantastic youth Indigenous program for young people aged 14-17 that fosters sporting skills and leadership qualities. The event supports pride, identity and achievement, with players often developing the confidence and ability to play a key role in sports development and community engagement within their own communities.
Special mentions must go to the Indigenous Programs team, Sport & Recreation Officers, elders within the communities and team supporters for coaching, mentoring and supporting the players and ensuring the successful delivery of the Bunburra program. A big thank you also to our event Ambassador, former rugby league star Petero Civoniceva, for being such a positive influence on the day.
Special mentions go to our wonderful performers:
- Ethan Bulabula Yaga on the didgeridoo
- Yugambeh Choir
- Luther Cora and the Yugambeh Dancers
