Gymnastics Coach Profile: Paula Sargent-Tenuyl
How long have you been with PCYC Sandgate?
I have been with PCYC Sandgate for 20 years! I started as a casual gymnastics coach, then moved into the position of Head Coach, and now I am the Gymnastics Coordinator.
What do you enjoy about your role?
I love overseeing the whole gymnastics program and being really hands-on with mentoring and training the coaches in the club. It is certainly a different role than being a gymnastics coach and working directly with the children, but now I feel as though I am contributing to helping gymnasts and the coaches to achieve their goals. I still love coaching and seeing the children light up when they have achieved a new skill.
What are your highlights at PCYC Sandgate?
I’ve got lots of highlights from my 20-year career! I’ve achieved many special accolades over the years including Level 7 Open MAG State Teach Coach for Queensland, Queensland Men’s Coach of Year and Judge of Year, and a special recognition award for my services in Men’s Gymnastics in Queensland. I also have coached numerous regional and state champions over the years.
Above all though, what I really value from my job is being part of a family, seeing our gymnasts and coaches grow up through the club and reaching their own achievements, and being part of a community that interacts with one another across all generations. A definite highlight is our end of year club competition that we hold each year where we get dressed up in different themes!
Not many people would know this, but I am a qualified caterer! I worked in the hospitality industry when I was younger, but as the hours weren’t really suitable when I was trying to raise a young family, I went back to my other love as a gymnastics coach. I’ve never looked back!
