Gymnastics Skill of the Month: Sit Up

A sit up is a multi-muscle exercise that strengthens the abdominals, as well as other muscles groups, including the chest, lower back and neck.

How to perform a proper sit up:
  1. Lie on your back.
  2. Bend your legs with your feet firmly on the ground to stabilise your lower body.
  3. Cross your hands to opposite shoulders over your chest or place them behind your ears, without pulling on your neck.
  4. Pull your upper body all the way up toward your knees using your abdominal muscles. Exhale as you lift.
  5. Slowly lower yourself down, returning to your starting point. Inhale as you lower.

Beginners should aim for 10 repetitions at a time and focus on form.

If you find this easy, try hooking your feet together during a sit up to provide a workout for your lower legs and hip flexors too!
