Gymnastics Skill of the Month: Sit Up
A sit up is a multi-muscle exercise that strengthens the abdominals, as well as other muscles groups, including the chest, lower back and neck.
How to perform a proper sit up:
- Lie on your back.
- Bend your legs with your feet firmly on the ground to stabilise your lower body.
- Cross your hands to opposite shoulders over your chest or place them behind your ears, without pulling on your neck.
- Pull your upper body all the way up toward your knees using your abdominal muscles. Exhale as you lift.
- Slowly lower yourself down, returning to your starting point. Inhale as you lower.
Beginners should aim for 10 repetitions at a time and focus on form.
If you find this easy, try hooking your feet together during a sit up to provide a workout for your lower legs and hip flexors too!
