Meet our Trainer of the Month Luke Gauci from PCYC Bayside
When did you join the PCYC Bayside team?
I started as the Bayside Gym & Fitness manager in July 2021.
Why did you become a trainer?
I have grown up participating in and loving sport and have always wanted to work in health and fitness. I thoroughly enjoy taking an interest in people and helping them achieve their goals. Not only are the physical changes rewarding to see, but I think the mental impacts of health and fitness are often understated.
What is the most rewarding moment in your career as a trainer?
I once trained a lady who started out by winning a Facebook promotion. After 6 weeks she was hooked. When starting out she had some poor lifestyle habits and 4 years on, she has developed and sustained a healthy relationship with food and exercise. She lost a considerable amount of weight but the most impressive changes for me was seeing her movement patterns improve! From not being able to complete a body weight squat to being able to Squat 80kg for repetitions was very rewarding to witness!
What are you training for personally at the moment?
I try and strength train 4x per week, splitting my training into 2 lower body days and 2 upper body days. I am currently working towards running a half marathon so I try and run 2-3 times per week also. I have had my fair share of injuries from playing sport over the years so I like to have a day where I spend a good 45min stretching, foam rolling etc. I enjoy playing oztag / touch football and normally play in a social competition once a week also.
