Staff spotlight: Mary from PCYC Bayside

Mary is a Gym+Fitness Instructor at PCYC Bayside! She loves 80’s & 90’s classic music and has an instant uncontrollable urge to breakout in a ‘Move That Body Baby’ song and dance spectacle!

When did you join the team at PCYC Bayside?

I started my journey at PCYC Bayside in 2023 over 19 months ago and transitioned into the ‘Gym & Fitness’ space 5 months ago.

Why did you decide to become a trainer?

I started my fitness journey at age 16 when I was introduced to the world of group fitness classes, not to mention those iconic 80’s gym gear and moves, hence my love of the 80’s era!

What started as a school sport activity had turned into my passion for fitness and to this day plays an important part in my life and daily routine. As an inactive teenager, it was the group fitness classes that sparked a ‘ah-ha’ moment and flipped my mindset to leading an active, healthy lifestyle. There is a lot to be said about the benefits of group fitness classes and the value it provides when it comes to one’s health, wellbeing and fitness. For this reason, I wanted to turn my passion and hobby into helping others with their fitness journey by getting ‘Fit in Group Time’!!

What are you training for personally now?

I am looking to participate in my first beginner triathlon this year and yet to commence my training program.

What is your personal favourite moment in your fitness journey?

One that immediately comes to mind is a marathon that I won’t forget. It was the day of unforeseen circumstances where I sustained a knee injury by coming off my bike at only 10kms into the ride. Post paramedic attention, I managed to get back on the bike to complete the 100kms albeit double the length of time than initially anticipated and crossing the finishing line after the event had closed many hours prior.I was grateful to have been able to complete the ride.
