Staff spotlight: Rhys from PCYC Ipswich

I’m Rhys! Currently the Club Manager at PCYC Ipswich, and loving being a part of this amazing organisation.

When did you join the team at PCYC Ipswich?

I have been with PCYC for over a year now, starting out at Lang Park in the Club Coordinator role, briefly out at Zillmere and now calling Ipswich my home! But my PCYC Queensland journey started when I was 7 at Logan doing junior gymnastics (where I won the sweetest trophy of them all – most improved).

Why did you decide to become a trainer?

I have worked in the fitness industry for 10 years with my passion starting with my love of sport as a teenager, playing high level soccer all through high school, and falling in love with the training involved. After starting out as a Personal Trainer, I went on to start and finish my degree in exercise science to better understand what the human body is capable of. My favourite thing about what fitness can do is the community it creates, in a busy world, it’s amazing to have an escape where you can make friends with likeminded people in a gym like PCYC Queensland.

What are you training for personally now?

After completing my first sprint triathlon earlier this year, I am full steam ahead for my first Olympic distance triathlon in November! This goes against the grain of my lifting heavy weight mentality but loving the challenge.

What is your personal favourite moment in your fitness journey?

My favourite personal fitness achievement would be doing a 100km ultramarathon on the SkiErg with a good mate. We raised over $11,000 for charity and have both never touched a SkiErg since.
