As we continue celebrating National Volunteer Week, meet Braking the Cycle Volunteer Mentor John!
John is a Braking the Cycle Volunteer, a volunteer driver mentor program designed to support learner drivers without access to a supervisor or registered vehicle to complete their logbook hours. The program aims to provide young people with increased employment opportunities, community connections, and driver education.
Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself and how did you hear about the volunteering role at PCYC Queensland?
I am a retiree who was looking to get involved in our community that would benefit the future leaders of our town and country, our youth.
What inspired you to become a volunteer at PCYC Queensland?
It has always been my goal to serve my community and in particular, inspire the youth.
What motivated you to choose PCYC Queensland for volunteering?
A friend who was working for the PCYC asked our coordinator and recommended who in turn contacted me and my adventure started.
Can you describe your role as a volunteer and the activities you’re involved in?
My role at the PCYC Braking the Cycle volunteer is to mentor good driving skills and road manners to help people achieve their driving licenses.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering at PCYC Queensland?
Helping young people obtain their licenses and the fantastic friendships made along the way.
Can you share a memorable moment or experience from your volunteer work?
Memorable moments are something money can’t buy, gifts can’t buy it is the enormous smiles, gratitude, and happiness shown when passing the driving test.
How has volunteering at PCYC Queensland impacted you personally?
Has made me understand more about the younger generation the friendships made it incredible seeing them as time goes by driving by themself proudly knowing I was a big part of their lives.
Is there anything else you would like to add about your experience as a volunteer?
I have enjoyed every moment of it and will continue to enjoy it for as long as I can.
