Sporting Schools

By developing a child’s fundamental movement skills, Gymnastics provides a sound basis for further skill development across all sports.  Through exploration and sequencing of movements, gymnastics makes cognitive demands on children to listen, problem solve, make decisions and prepare to take controlled risks.  Gymnastics promotes all-round physical development, muscular strength and endurance, joint flexibility, balance, coordination and core strength required for everyday living.

With our existing curriculum based program been a natural fit, why wouldn’t we allow schools to take advantage of the funding on offer? We BRING ALL THE EQUIPMENT WITH US for no extra charge!!!

Students benefit for the years of experience we have delivering programs in schools, with all the traditional gymnastics equipment – specially modified to be safe for beginners and portable too!

Dance classes at PCYC allow students to keep active while learning about the dance styles of Hip Hop and Jazz. Dance is a great way to build confidence, meet new friends and also has significant mental and health benefits. Dance increases muscular strength and endurance, assists with better coordination, agility and flexibility, improves mental functioning, increases self-esteem and allows for self-expression and creativity.

Dance classes are offered according to the age of the student. However in some cases students may be more advanced or require more support and therefore may be better suited to a class that is not stipulated by their age.  Therefore you are best to trial the students in the class determined by their age and then talk to the instructor to see what would be best for the student.  It is also very important that if students commit to the classes they attend class on a regular basis. It is very daunting for students to return to class after missing a lesson and try to catch up the steps learnt in the previous lesson. It is also very important that students commit to rehearsing each week, as otherwise the end of year concert can become very stressful for the students.

Please note the end of year concert is a low key, fun night for students to showcase the dances and work they have learnt throughout the year. This concert is held in the school hall on a Tuesday night, instead of normal classes. These classes focus on the style of hip hop and allow students to learn techniques and steps which are strong, sharp, dynamic and require lots of coordination and attitude. Each class consists of a warm up and the learning of new steps and recapping of previously learnt techniques and steps. Students will start to learn a routine at the beginning of the year and each week students will learn more steps to add onto the dance. They will then be required to practise and rehearse this dance, as all dances will be performed at the  end of year concert.

A new dance routine may be started at the beginning of each term or semester. Jazz classes focus on learning the technical requirements of the jazz style. Jazz is fun, energetic and sharp but requires correct alignment, posture and technique. Each class consists of a warm up and the learning of new steps and recapping of previously learnt technique and steps. Students will start to learn a routine at the beginning of the year and each week students will learn more steps to add onto the dance. They will then be required to practice and rehearse this dance, as all dances will be performed at the end of year concert. A new dance routine may be started at the beginning of each term or semester.

Martial Arts

Judo means the ‘gentle way’ and captures fighting methods borne from ancient Japanese culture based on the principles of efficient use of power and mutual benefit. Modern judo is practiced in 204 countries by women, men, girls and boys and is both a martial art and a sport.  Judo is best known for its spectacular throwing techniques but also involves grapping, hold‐downs and other control methods. At Ipswich PCYC, Judo is learned on special mats (tatami) for comfort and safety.  The skills learned in Judo foster fitness, agility, alertness, discipline, concentration,  sportsmanship and selfcontrol and importantly develops self‐confidence; all virtues of a developing individual.  As a sport, Judo has a strict set of rules that govern competition (shiai). Referees ensure that safety is always a priority. Students can test their skills by competing in club tournaments. Divisions for girls, boys, women and men are based on age and weight. Novices and special needs are regularly catered for. Avid judoka may train to compete at State or National level.

Jujitsu training promotes defensive moves rather than aggressive ones. It provides a student with, protective behaviours to help avoid violent situations, defences from bullying situations and effective responses from an attempted abduction or assault. Ju Jitsu training enhances co-ordination, balance and encourages a positive attitude to physical activity. Ju Jitsu builds confidence, character and self-control. Confidence itself provides a strong deterrent in many confrontations. Confidence enhances one’s ability to stand up to negative peer pressure. Improved attention-span and focus can be another benefit of Ju Jitsu training.

Recreational Gymnastics

We believe that gymnastics is amongst the best Physical Education a person can receive.  We know that gymnastics is the foundation for all human movement; and by extension; for other sports.  Programs are progressive allowing for advancement through the skill syllabus at the students own pace.  Our program is a seamless pathway through to any level of gymnastic participation.

Our Recreational program follows a state-wide delivered syllabus, so gymnasts can change class and location if required, while continuing to receive a consistent quality teaching program.  All our coaches are accredited, and our syllabus has been specially developed to provide a structured learning program in a non-competitive environment. At every level our classes are designed to be fun, educational and improve movement skills for life.

Our KinderGym program is a movement-based learning experience for children under five years and their parents or caregivers.  Educational research tells us that children learn best through exploring and discovering their abilities via targeted physical activity.

KinderGym classes are structured sessions, which introduce basic skills and strength building activities.  Our program is designed to inspire motor milestone development, boost confidence and cognitive development and provides a platform for social interaction.

KinderGym provides a safe environment for children to develop physical literacy in a fun playful way.

This non–structured class is designed for children under 4.5 years and their caregiver. Our underpinning value is through play, children develop skills in all areas of their development – social, emotional, cognitive, language and physical.  Playing is a very natural way for children to learn, discover, create and think things through, all while experiencing the pleasures and delights of childhood.  It encourages curiosity and investigation and motivates children to spread their wings.

All activities are organised by our qualified Kindergym Coaches. Bring some morning tea to sit and enjoy the company of other families.

Trampoline and Tumbling

Who wouldn’t get a thrill out of jumping freely into the air?
