Nelson’s Story
As a newcomer to Australia, Nelson was looking for other young people to connect with. PCYC Queensland’s After Dark program opened Nelson’s world up to friendships, mentors & opportunities and now, as a Member Services Officer – he is doing the same for other young people like himself.
“I first moved to Brisbane in 2005 when I was still in high school. Through school, I found out about PCYC Hills District’s Basketball After Dark Program.
My favourite part was the social aspect, the mentorship and getting to meet people from diverse backgrounds, many of whom have gone on to great things.
The community made you feel like you belonged somewhere. Having moved to a new country, it was a chance to bump into kids that had similar life stories and experiences to what I had and who I could relate to. Having the same upbringing as them, meant you felt more connected.
Fast forward to 2022, and I started working in the Member Services Team at PCYC Hills District. I have formed some amazing connections with our members, and I love being able to make kids feel welcome in our club.
My hope is to create amazing memories for the young people in our local community, just like the ones I have.”
