What is the Duke of Ed?

The Duke of Ed is an international leading Non-Formal Education Framework aimed to provide all young Australians, aged 14-24 years, with the opportunity to uncover their purpose, passion and place in the world to become #WORLDREADY.

The objectives and requirements of the Duke of Ed Framework overlap with those of PCYC Queensland’s Youth and Community Programs. This means our young people have the opportunity to incorporate achieving the Duke of Ed Award into their ongoing engagement with our clubs. All sections of the Duke of Ed Framework can be completed at PCYC clubs. With access to state-of-the-art facilities, motivated leaders, and an extensive volunteer network, PCYC Queensland is your one-stop-shop for Duke of Ed.

How does it work?

  • Use the Duke of Ed Framework to prepare for an Adventurous Journey
  • Set your own goals and record their progress
  • Create the change you want to see in the world
  • Learn valuable practical and social skills for career development
  • Make new friends along the way

How is the Duke of Ed achieved?

To achieve a Duke of Ed Level with PCYC Queensland, each Registered User must be a part of their local PCYC club, wherein they will practice a skill, improve their physical well-being, volunteer in their community, and experience an Adventurous Journey in a new environment. Some of the PCYC programs that meet activity requirements are Youth Leadership Team (YLT), After Dark, Drop In, Braking The Cycle (BTC), RUBY (Rise Up, Be Yourself), CHAMP and more. PCYC Bornhoffen and PCYC Capricorn Coast are well-equipped facilities that host regular PCYC Adventurous Journeys and offer our Registered Users a memorable conclusion to their Duke of Ed experience.

PCYC Queensland is proud of the culture being built around Duke of Ed. The impact of this culture is realised when our Registered Users maintain regular interaction with their club. As such, a condition of completing your Duke of Ed Award with PCYC Queensland is a willingness to help foster this culture through engagement with our programs and our community. For more information about achieving Duke of Ed sections with PCYC Queensland, contact our Duke of Ed Coordinator via dukeofed@pcyc.org.au.

Emergency Services Cadets

Partnered with Queensland’s Emergency services, this program provides young people with a safe, fun and inclusive environment that offers them practical life skills and leadership opportunities.

About the program

The Emergency Services Cadets (ESC) program is delivered in partnership with PCYC Queensland and Queensland’s Emergency Services, thanks to the support of Queensland Police Services (QPS) and Queensland Fire Department (QFD).

The ESC program is offered to young people aged 12 to 17 and usually operates out of an Emergency Service facility (such as a local SES headquarters or Rural Fire Service station). The Cadet ‘Unit’ is managed under the leadership and guidance of volunteer Adult Leaders with mentoring and activities from Emergency Services personnel. Activities often include First aid, casualty management, search and rescue, swift water theory, road safety, forensics, highway patrol, K9 units, navigation, radio communications, Q&A with ES personnel, team building and problem solving.

This program offers cadets a greater understanding of the emergency services sector, and the roles and responsibilities undertaken by various emergency services personnel. ESC also assists cadets to feel a sense of place within their community, to understanding of the value of volunteering and to feel more confident in their personal abilities.

ESC program aims to provide a fun, safe and inclusive environment for young people to develop communication skills, interpersonal skills and initiative through various topics and exercises. The program works closely with emergency services to foster personal growth in cadets and encourage them to explore both paid and volunteering roles within the emergency services whilst building community resilience.

In partnership with Queensland’s Emergency Services, we’ve been able to provide YTD
