Braking The Cycle

Braking the Cycle is designed to support learner drivers without access to a supervisor or registered vehicle to complete their logbook hours.

About the program

The aim of the program is to provide young people with increased employment opportunities, community connection and driver education. Participants are matched with a specific volunteer from our extensive and experienced driver mentor network. Mentors provide encouragement and help young people improve their self-esteem and develop positive road safety attitudes.

Since its inception in 2012, Braking the Cycle has received numerous awards from the Australian Road Safety Awards, Queensland Reconciliation Awards and Regional Achievement & Community Awards, a silver award in the 2017 National Crime and Violence Prevention Awards, and most recently named a winner of a prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award in December 2018.

Changing Gears

Braking the Cycle – Changing Gears is an adapted program designed to support the specific cultural and learning needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living within remote communities.

The program provides: equitable access to licensing, reduces instances of unlicensed driving, improves road safety outcomes, supports re-education of drivers who have been issued with an infringement that could lead to a licence suspension, and improves well-being, connection, and employment opportunities through community mentoring and volunteerism.

Available at Mossman, PCYC Napranum, PCYC Palm Island and PCYC Yarrabah

Become a Volunteer Driver Mentor!

Would you like to support young people to learn to drive?  Can you spare an hour or more a week?

If so, we’d love you to join our team of over 700 volunteer driver mentors.  You will need to hold an open licence (min 12 months) and have or be willing to obtain a Blue Card (we can help you with this).  Student participation is assessed by a driving school to ensure competency and vehicles, and comprehensive training is provided for mentors.

If you would like to get involved, please complete the enquiry form and a member of the team will be in touch.
