In the early hours of Thursday 19 March, PCYC Toowoomba was destroyed by fire. The club team quickly moved from crisis mode into action mode and have shown resilience and commitment in working together to create connection and opportunity.
Within a few short weeks the Toowoomba team focused on getting back into the community. They worked quickly to get programs and activities back up and running:
- Braking The Cycle is running out of Toowoomba Library, and celebrated a participant getting his licence just days after the fire.
- Our Youth and Community Programs team had programs up and running the week after fire and continue to run programs at various local parks and schools.
- After hosting pop-ups in the park and other fun school holiday activities, we have a secured a temporary venue and we will be running Gymnastics and Little n Active from the University of Southern Queensland from Term 2.
- Our Sunday markets returned four weeks after the fire, providing much missed local connection.
- Our Rebuild Fund has raised over $20,000 to help with our temporary running costs as well as the costing of rebuilding. We are so thankful to the community for their ongoing support.
- Local businesses have generously offered their support including Bunnings North Toowoomba, Master Hire, Heritage People First Bank, World Gym Toowoomba, Storage King, and FKG Group. Local businesses like these really understand that PCYC is the heart of the community and we are so grateful for their support while we get back on our feet.
Our building burned down, but PCYC is not a building, we are a community and we will rebuild.
